Beginning the Journey

Laurice's experience with hair loss was a deeply personal and emotional journey. After losing 50% of her long hair due to thyroid issues and experiencing COVID twice in one year, she tried everything to restore it—vitamins, lotions, miracle hair products, and even consultations with a naturopathic doctor. Despite her efforts, the texture of her hair changed drastically, becoming brittle, frizzy, and thin, with random patches of curls and straight sections. Nothing helped. The moment of realization came when she saw herself in a family photo at her mother-in-law’s funeral in February 2023. She barely recognized herself. Every day felt like a bad hair day.

Acceptance and Transformation

After nearly two years of exhausting every option, Laurice accepted that her hair loss was her new reality. It had crushed her self-esteem, and she mourned the loss of the beautiful hair she once had. In search of hope, she turned to YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram, seeking knowledge, inspiration, and encouragement from others who had embraced the wig life.

Wearing wigs has completely transformed Laurice’s life. Compliments from strangers have become a regular occurrence, and she no longer feels invisible. The confidence she gained from wearing wigs even gave her the courage to finally start the YouTube vlog she had been procrastinating on. Nothing was going to stop her now!

One of her biggest concerns was how her husband would react. Having remarried in 2019, she knew he loved her long bio hair. While she wasn’t worried about the opinions of others—because unless someone had walked in her shoes, they couldn’t understand the emotional toll of hair loss—his thoughts mattered to her. She had a heart-to-heart conversation with him, expressing her desire to wear wigs. He saw the pain in her eyes and assured her that all he wanted was for her to be happy. He was completely supportive and, to her relief, loved not only how she looked in wigs but also how they made her feel.

Laurice’s background in fashion and beauty helped her choose styles and colors that suited her. Visiting a nail salon after purchasing her first wig, a woman gasped and asked, “Who does your hair?” That moment solidified her confidence—wig life was going to be okay.

Since then, Laurice has exclusively purchased her wigs from Wig Studio 1, praising their exceptional customer service. She has openly shared her wig journey on social media, inspiring other women to take the leap into wig life. One of the most touching moments came when a Facebook friend reached out to her on behalf of her mother, who was undergoing chemotherapy and had lost her hair. She needed a wig for her granddaughter’s wedding. Without hesitation, Laurice gifted her own beloved Raquel Welch wig, ensuring her friend's mother felt beautiful on such an important day.

The transformation has been liberating. Laurice eventually cut off the remaining two inches of her bio hair and rarely thinks about it anymore. She no longer stresses over styling, humidity, or bad hair days—wigs have given her a freedom she never expected. The reactions from others have been overwhelmingly positive. At a major community event, she received countless “wow” compliments, with many saying she looked 10-20 years younger. At 70 years old, that felt incredible!

Stigma and Social Acceptance

Laurice firmly believes that the stigma surrounding wigs is fading. Society readily accepts enhancements like acrylic nails, eyebrow tattoos, dental work, and wrinkle fillers—why should hair loss be any different? She proudly shares her journey because she knows others need to hear that there is life after hair loss. A good wig is an investment, and she encourages others to educate themselves on proper wig care.

Advice

Her best advice? Start with a wig that closely matches your natural style, density, and color. This makes the transition easier, and once comfortable, you can experiment with different styles. She also emphasizes that most people don’t notice a well-fitted, natural-looking wig—she has even fooled professional hair stylists!

Laurice's Routine and Favorites

Laurice has perfected her wig routine: shaking her wig upside down before styling, using dry shampoo to reduce shine, and applying wig wax for texture. She uses a wide-tooth comb to detangle after each wear and stores her wigs properly to maintain their shape. She recommends Estetica shampoo and conditioner, Jon Renau HD Smooth Detangler, and a lower-heat flat iron for styling heat-friendly synthetics.

Her first wig was a heat-friendly Raquel Welch Ready For Take Off, a versatile choice with all the bells and whistles. Since then, she has expanded her collection, favoring Raquel Welch, Gabor, and BelleTress wigs. She recently ordered Laguna Beach by Belle Tress, just in time for her anniversary—she knows her husband will love it.

For Laurice, wig life is the best life. Her only regret? Not starting her wig journey sooner.
