Martha's Story
j
I was born with ectodermal dysplasia, a birth defect that affects my teeth, hair, and nails. My hair was always short and thin growing up, which made me an easy target for teasing. Growing up, I always dreamed of having big, voluminous hair, like the glamorous styles of the ’80s. But for years, I didn’t see myself as a "wig wearer." Wigs, after all, were often something to be ashamed of, right? Wrong! After watching countless YouTube videos and learning what not to do as a new wig wearer, I decided to take the leap. So, I began my wig-wearing journey in March 2022.
J
I nervously shared my plan on Facebook, letting my friends, family, and coworkers know that I was thinking about wearing wigs. I braced for laughter and criticism—but they never came. That Saturday, with my daughter by my side for support, I went to a local wig shop and bought my first wig. I did not know the brand or even much about wig styles, but that wig marked the start of my transformation.
K
At work, I told everyone to expect a "new me" on Monday. On my first day back, I walked in scared, trying to shrink my 6'1" frame, but I was determined. To my surprise, the reactions were entirely positive. Everyone marveled at my new look. The fear I had was all in my head. From that moment on, I was hooked—ready to explore the world of wigs.
K
My family, especially my husband and children, have been incredibly supportive. My husband never complained about the constant deliveries from UPS and always made me feel excited about each new wig. Friends and coworkers were equally thrilled. I love that I can change my look daily—blonde one day, redhead the next.

The Challenges of Wig-Wearing
k
Of course, there were practical challenges. I went wild for wigs, spending thousands of dollars on styles that, looking back, probably weren’t right for me. It felt like being a kid in a candy store. But I’ve since learned a few valuable lessons: wigs don’t have to be expensive to look fabulous, and it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of new styles—so it’s important to know what works for you. I feel more comfortable purchasing online, where I can research styles, read reviews, and reach out to support if I have questions.
K
Having a consultation was also incredibly helpful, as it helped me focus on styles that truly suit me.
K
Wearing a wig can sometimes lead to awkward moments. Since wigs are often associated with cancer patients, people often assume I’m battling cancer. While I appreciate their concern, it can be uncomfortable to explain my situation in more detail than I would prefer. This led to an internal struggle—was it okay to wear wigs without a significant medical reason? Eventually, I realized I deserved to feel good, and wearing a wig does just that for me.
k
Breaking the Stigma
K
The stigma surrounding wigs has to end! We live in a world where false eyelashes, hair extensions, and even breast implants are accepted. So why are wigs still taboo? Wigs give people the chance to change their look without damaging their natural hair, and for those experiencing hair loss, they can be life-changing. I want everyone I meet to see a confident, wig-wearing woman and know that wigs are normal, beautiful, and empowering.

Encouraging Others on Their Journey
K
As a medical professional, I interact with up to 20 patients a day at a busy cardiology office. I never wear the same wig twice, so patients often see me with a different look at each visit. If someone compliments my hair and I sense they’re struggling with their own hair loss, I’ll share my story. I’ve even had moments where sharing my wig journey has helped others explore their own.
K
One of my fondest memories is the day a husband and wife came to the office. I could tell the wife was self-conscious about her thinning hair and that she was eyeing mine, likely wondering how I had such a full, beautiful head of hair when she didn’t. The husband, a sweet older man, complimented me on my hair and mentioned that his wife used to have hair just like it, but due to medications and failing health, she had lost hers. I took this as an opportunity to share my story.
l
They were amazed and left the office with the Wigstudio1 website information and a newfound pep in their step. It only takes a moment to change someone’s world, and if my wig-wearing journey brings a smile, then I’ve made that moment count. Most times, though, I simply say thank you and smile.

My Favorite Styles and Brands
K
I love curls—big, flowy curls, soft layers, and classic styles that make me feel elegant and polished. My favorite wig styles include Lola, Broadway, Editor's Pick, Coco, and Kylie. When it comes to brands, I’m a fan of Henry Margu, Mane Attraction, WigPro, and Envy.
l
Overtime, I realized that hair does not define me. Wigs are simply part of who I am now. They give me confidence, boost my mood, and allow me to express myself in ways I never could before. Wigs have given me the freedom to reinvent myself every day. They have become an essential part of my life, and I could not imagine life without them. Now, as I approach 57, I can finally have the full, beautiful hair I always dreamed of.
